El tercer término ineludible — la cultura que talla la geografía neuronal. The unavoidable third term — culture that carves neural geography.
No se puede aislar al espíritu del cerebro, ni al cerebro del espíritu. Además, no se puede aislar al espíritu/cerebro de la cultura. One cannot isolate spirit from brain, nor brain from spirit. Furthermore, one cannot isolate spirit/brain from culture.

La unidualidad de la cápsula anterior — cerebro/espíritu — todavía no basta. Morin introduce un tercer término ineliminable: la cultura. Sin lenguaje, sin saber hacer, sin saberes acumulados en el patrimonio social, dice, «el espíritu humano no hubiera despegado y el cerebro de homo sapiens se habría limitado a las computaciones de un primate de menor rango». The previous capsule's uni-duality — brain/spirit — is still not enough. Morin introduces a third ineliminable term: culture. Without language, know-how, accumulated knowledge in the social heritage, he says, "the human spirit would not have taken off and the brain of homo sapiens would have been limited to the computations of a lower-rank primate".
La cultura, dice Morin, no es un tercio ajeno, sino un tercio incluso en la identidad del espíritu/cerebro. Hay que introducirla en la unidualidad y transformarla en trinidad: tres términos que se necesitan mutuamente y se coproducen. Culture, Morin says, is not an external third, but a third included within the identity of spirit/brain. It must be introduced into the uni-duality and transformed into trinity: three terms that mutually need and coproduce each other.

Sin cultura, el cerebro queda primateWithout culture, the brain stays primate
El cerebro de homo sapiens, dice Morin, ya era hace cien mil años portador de posibilidades intelectuales que sólo se realizaron mucho más tarde. La potencia neurológica estaba; faltaba lo que Morin llama el engramamiento cultural: códigos lingüísticos y simbólicos transmitidos en una cultura. Sólo en esas condiciones «hay emergencia del espíritu». La cultura no decora al cerebro — lo despierta. The brain of homo sapiens, says Morin, already a hundred thousand years ago carried intellectual possibilities only realised much later. The neurological capacity was there; what was missing is what Morin calls cultural engramming: linguistic and symbolic codes transmitted within a culture. Only under such conditions "does spirit emerge". Culture does not decorate the brain — it wakes it.

From childhood, via family, school, university, spirit undergoes what Morin calls cultural imprinting: a one-way influence that creates in the brain's geography "interneuronal unions and circuits — routes, paths, ways and signposts". The cultural leaves a physical, neuronal trace. Learning a language carves circuits. Learning a musical metre rewrites auditory cortex. Culture is, literally, inherited neural architecture.

Pero la flecha invierte de nuevo: la cultura — el lenguaje, los mitos, las teorías — no existe sin las interacciones entre los espíritus/cerebros de los individuos que la sostienen. Cerebro sin cultura no despega; cultura sin cerebros no existe. Cada uno de los tres términos es, dice Morin, indispensable para los otros dos. But the arrow reverses again: culture — language, myths, theories — does not exist without the interactions between the spirits/brains of the individuals that sustain it. Brain without culture does not take off; culture without brains does not exist. Each of the three terms is, says Morin, indispensable to the other two. And each contains them: the brain contains culture as circuits, culture contains the brain as engrammed knowledge, spirit contains both as its sphere of operation.

Los casos documentados de niños criados fuera del lenguaje humano — Victor de Aveyron, los niños-lobo de Midnapore — confirman lo que Morin sostiene en seco. Sin cultura ingresada en el cerebro durante el periodo crítico, el sapiens potencial no emerge. La hardware está, el sistema operativo no se instala. La cultura no es accesorio: es condición de emergencia. Documented cases of children raised outside human language — Victor of Aveyron, the Midnapore wolf-children — confirm what Morin states bluntly. Without culture installed in the brain during the critical period, the potential sapiens does not emerge. The hardware is there, the operating system does not install. Culture is not accessory: it is the condition of emergence.

Aprender una segunda lengua, especialmente en la infancia, deja huellas medibles: regiones corticales adicionales activas, mayor materia gris en áreas de control ejecutivo, circuitos de cambio de código fortalecidos. Learning a second language, especially in childhood, leaves measurable traces: additional cortical regions active, increased grey matter in executive-control areas, strengthened code-switching circuits. The bilingual's brain is another architecture than the monolingual's. Culture — a symbolic code — inscribes itself in neural geometry. Exactly Morin's "imprinting", now visible in MRI.

Morin anota a pie de página una observación inquietante: las neurociencias inauguran las primeras manipulaciones del cerebro, ya efectuadas por Estados totalitarios en asilos psiquiátricos para someter espíritus. La sociedad — instancia suprema — puede ahora retroactuar sobre la bioquímica del cerebro, «sin la que sin embargo no habría ni espíritu, ni cultura, ni sociedad, ni Estado». La trinidad se cierra en círculo, también en su versión perversa. Morin notes a disturbing footnote: the neurosciences inaugurate the first manipulations of the brain, already carried out by totalitarian States in psychiatric asylums to subdue spirits. Society — supreme instance — can now retroact upon brain biochemistry, "without which there would yet be no spirit, no culture, no society, no State". The trinity closes in a circle, in its perverse version too.

It needs a spirit to conceive it (to reflect on its own organisation) and a culture to develop it (without which it stays in primate computations). The most complex organ in the known universe depends, in order to become so, on what it itself produces.

There is no spirit without a brain to produce it nor without a culture to emerge it. A human spirit "isolated" — outside language, outside symbolic exchange — is not a reduced spirit: it is not a spirit. It is a sleeping sapiens.

It exists only in and through interactions between the spirits/brains of the individuals who carry and transmit it. When the last carrier ceases, the culture ceases. It is the only one of the three instances that lacks a biological substrate of its own.

La fórmula «tercio incluso» es un calco de la lógica medieval (tertium quid inclusum) que Morin reactiva. No estamos sumando un tercer elemento exterior a una dualidad cerrada: estamos reconociendo que la dualidad cerebro/espíritu ya estaba abierta a un afuera que la sostiene. La cultura no llega después: siempre estuvo dentro. La trinidad es la unidualidad vista entera. The formula "included third" is a calque of medieval logic (tertium quid inclusum) that Morin reactivates. We are not adding a third element external to a closed duality: we are recognising that the brain/spirit duality was already open to an outside that sustains it. Culture does not arrive afterwards: it was always inside. Trinity is uni-duality seen whole.

Without culture, no spiritual emergence: potential sapiens stays latent, language does not install, symbolic thought does not operate. Trinity dissolves the reductive matter/spirit problem by adding the plane that mediates them: culture is the concrete site where spirit takes form upon the brain.

Pero la cultura no sólo libera: también condiciona. El imprinting es influencia sin retorno; lo que se inscribe en los circuitos no se borra fácilmente. Ideología, dogma, prejuicio cultural también tallan geografía neuronal. La trinidad no es una buena noticia romántica: es la materia prima de toda formación y de toda deformación humanas. But culture does not only liberate: it also conditions. Imprinting is influence without return; what's inscribed in circuits doesn't easily erase. Ideology, dogma, cultural prejudice also carve neural geography. Trinity is not romantic good news: it is the raw material of every human formation and every human deformation.
